Monday, July 19th, 2010

Arthritis is a general condition, which involves the hurt of the bones, specially the joints. The joints are places where two bones meet like hands, hips, elbows, or knees. Arthritis causes pain, stiffness, inflammation, and swelling of the joints.

Over time due to wear and tear of the bones and ancient age, people start to feel stiff, sore and in pain in some parts of their bodies, specially the joints area. People at the age of fifty, and above usually start to complain about these symptoms, and complains about pain and mobility problem. Arthritis is also the leading cause of disability to some people due to the pain and inflammation of the affected area. This disease can last for a long period or recurs, which can lead to tissue hurt.

Here are uncommon types of arthritis, and according to doctors, here are 100 types of arthritis in the medical book. Here are some of the most common cases of arthritis:

Rheumatoid arthritis – the most common and recurring form of arthritis that usually affects the hands, wrists, and knees. This type is also classified as autoimmune inflammation arthritis. The inflammation spreads nearly the surrounding tissues and eventually costs the cartilage and the bones. Inflammation is the body’s untreated reaction if it is afflicted with a disease or injury.

In the case of Rheumatoid arthritis, the defense mechanism of the body is muddled sending incorrect signals in the brain and it starts to attack the body instead of healing the injured part. Left untreated this case may shorten the life span of a person who is suffering from arthritis by eighteen years.

Osteoarthritis – this arthritis is usually preconceived to be associated with people who are aging. Well in fact, osteoarthritis is a disease entailing the degradation of the joints. It primarily affects the weight bearing part of the body such the spine, hips, knees, and feet.

While mechanical factors can say to the development of osteoarthritis, some people are predisposed to have this disease as part of their genetic make-up. The onset of osteoarthritis takes time to manifest it slowly build up in the body, this is also the reason why many people has mistakenly correlates osteoarthritis as a sign of aging, while in fact it is in the patients body all along. For prevention early diagnosis and check-ups is the key in identifying if you have osteoarthritis.

Gout – is a disorder characterized by sudden recurring attacks of very painful arthritis caused by unwarranted deposits of monosodium urate crystal in the body, which accumulates in the joints due to abnormally high concentration of uric acid in the blood.

Sorry to say, 20% of people who have gout develop kidney stones. This is because the kidney cannot eliminate these toxins out of the body. Some of the uric acid is a by-product of cellular breakdown, this together with foods adds to the condition.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis – as the name implies is a common arthritis among children and teenagers under the age of 16. It is a persistent form of arthritis without any certain cause hence, the name idiopathic. In JIA or juvenile idiopathic arthritis, the joints become inflamed. This type of arthritis may be transient in scenery or recurring.

Here are many types of arthritis, the pain patterns may vary from one person to a further, and the occurrence depends on the person’s predisposition to the disease itself. This disease should not be a cause to limit you from the things you delight in or depress you, instead by learning the proper management of the disease, proper diet and exercise, and some lifestyle changes, you can be able to delight in the things you like the most.

Don’t over exercise. While a fixed exercise regimen is essential for your overall health, overusing your joints will have a detrimental effect on your body. The key is to exercise regularly – rather than trying to perform a week’s worth of exercise once a week. Exercise daily – or maintain a consistent schedule.
Avoid repetitive movements as often as possible. Repetitive movements of the wrists or knees can cause problems later in life. Try to switch activities frequently enough to avoid repetitive strain on the joints.
Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of fill up. A healthy diet and keeping your body properly hydrated are vital factors in avoiding the early onslaught of arthritis.

Degenerative Arthritis: What You Can Do to Reduce the Risks

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Degenerative arthritis or Osteoarthritis is one of the two tougher forms of the disease, with the other one being rheumatoid arthritis.

Common Causes of Degenerative Arthritis

Degenerative arthritis happens when cartilage of one or more of your joints are either partially smashed or completely broken down. Your joints contain a fluid known as the Synovial fluid. They provide lubrication to the joints and help them in performing effectively. Once these fluids dry sown, the cartilages no more get lubrication and start turning brittle. This results in greater friction and cartilage death.

Degenerative arthritis or OA is a biological anomaly heightened by age. Parts, which are most prone to OA, are hands, feet, and spine, obviously apart from the weight-registering joints like hips. Degenerative arthritis fuels the pain as it causes growth of new bones or spurs in place of cartilage. These bones go awkwardly in absence of synovial fluid and cause the agony.

Effects of Degenerative Arthritis

Patient suffering from Osteoarthritis suffer fantastic pain when they try to stand or walk. Others can hardly feel the try, as they have to make for each joint movement.

Tips for Reducing the Risk of Degenerative Arthritis

l Control Obesity

Obesity is believed to be one of the causes for the disease. To lessen the risk of OA, you can always cut down on your body weight. This seems like a logical train of thought. Higher your body weight, more the weight bearing joints have to bear. With time, their capacity to keep taking the load decreases. This can result in wearing away of cartilage.

l Joint Range Program

Degenerative arthritis might also be the result of some injury. In the event of a sustained injury to the joints, it is recommended to go for activity modification. A joint range program can be really fruitful in tackling the issue.

l Do Fixed Exercises

Fixed exercises and intermittent rest is known to have fantastic bearing in reducing the chances of the disease. If you have already ongoing on the dreary roads of arthritis, it is advisable to go for swimming and walking regularly. These will increase blood circulation and may result in re-blossoming of smashed cartilage. This way, the risk of aggravation can be cut-rate. If the pain is overbearing, the condition may soon get aggravated. Such risk needs to be minimized at all costs. It is also advisable to use localized heating prior to exercise. Once you are through with the regimen, you can go ahead with cold packs. This sets in positive motion in troubled joints and also alleviates the pain.

Moist Heat Therapy

Moist heat therapy is known to work pretty well for all kinds of joint inflammations. Proper health care personnel, who know about the point issues related to joint swelling, should be consulted. If you have any doubts and reckon that perhaps the disease is on setting, it is advisable to go for MRI, Arthroscopy, or Arthrocentesis. These can help a fantastic deal in nipping the disease in the bud stage.

While here are many medical treatments, which give relief and also partially cure the disease, it’s always better to keep the risk element cut-rate. You can always start with weight loss measures, if obesity is the monster that harasses you.

What could be the case of hip and joint paint to the point of not being able to sit or stand in a 10 yr old?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

He’s been sick for 4 months now and on the waiting for UCLA Children’s Hospital. All the blood tests are coming back normal as well as the MRI. The only business he tested positive for was the rheumatoid business (and slightly anemic) but he doesn’t have rheumatoid arthritis per 2 doctors. He’s starting to lose his balance when he stands/walks and can’t sit down for any amount of time without pain from the hips down to the ankles (including the muscles). The only comfortable spot he can be in with the least amount of pain is flat on the floor – even sleeping on an extremely comfortable mattress hurts. Regardless of where he sleeps at night, he is woken up in the middle of the night with pain. He is taking naprosyn per the UCLA doctor until he can get in to see her. Has anyone else experienced this or know anything about this? He was negative for lupus, mono, lyme disease, ankylosing spondylitis.
We are on the waiting list for a pediatric neurologist and pediatric ophthalmologist also. Watching my son in pain and being stuck in limbo because of the “logic” is so frustrating. If it were their children they would see him. Our family doctor keeps calling to emphasize the urgency but it’s gotten us nowhere so far.

Arthritis pain. On strong drugs + painkillers…?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Hi all,
Initially of all I have Psoriatic Arthritis, which is very similar to Rheumatoid but Psoriatic is more aggressive. I’m 26 and have arthritis all over my body. I’m under hospital treatment and take an ex-cancer drug (Methotrexate) but have been switched to Enbrel now.

I’m having problems with pain management. I take a higher dose Cocodamol at the moment with the highest dose of Diclofenac but it’s not working. I’m in a lot of pain. They are tying to place me up to a uncommon painkiller but I have problems with my liver performing arts up when they made my painkillers stronger last time.

I don’t know what to do as it’s so hard coping in pain all the time, but then having liver problems when they make them stronger. How do you cope? Have you found a certain painkiller to be fantastic? If so, please could you tell me the name of it and what dose you are on. Thank you.
spyrogirlkim – I’m sorry to hear of your illness. Best of luck hun.
Rev TL – I’m not being a walking experiment, I’m just doing what my Rhumotologist says, with all it is the NHS I have no options.
dbiebel@sbcglobal.net – Thanks but I eat very healthily now as it is.
gillianprowe – My skin condition is fine, the MTX is controlling that, if I stop it, it comes back. When I say arthritis all over body I mean I have it nearly everywhere. Back, neck, elbows, fingers, wrists, knees, hips, toes. I’m pretty close to having a wheelchair too, I’m in a disability changed home. I know what Psoriatic arthritis is, just not enough characters to describe everything. I was diagnosed at 13 but everything went downhill with having my children. I went from a horseriding person to stuck in chair 90% of the time and very quick too! The doctor at the hosp says they not inflammed but hurt has been left and they still hurt a lot. As for the diclo I take max dose (150mg) I said max dose in orig post.
