Had a knee injury not to long ago. It recovered, to an extent, but still bugs me from time to time. How can I get my knee back to normal (or at least as best I can) without medications of any kind. I don’t want to be reminded of this when I’m much older and don’t ever want surgery. Has anyone had any luck with this and what should I do?

Often referred to as an arthroplasty, knee substitution surgery is a procedure that removes the arthritic surfaces of the bones nearly the knee and caps the ends of the bones with smooth, polished, durable implants. Depending on what type of knee substitution you may be having, uncommon structures in your knee may or may not have to be removed. For instance, in the case of a total knee substitution, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, smashed joint cartilage, and menisci (shock absorbers) are removed and substituted by the implant. The medial and lateral collateral ligaments and tendons nearly the knee are typically left intact for all knee substitution procedures, except in unusual circumstances. Shawnee Mission Medical Crucial point (SMMC) will host a Total Knee Substitution (TKR) Live Surgery Webcast. The Webcast will feature Robert Sharpe, MD, of Midwest Orthopaedics, PA, as he surgically reconstructs a patient’s knee. Burrel Gaddy, MD, who is also with Midwest Orthopaedics, will serve as the moderator, answering questions live from the audience. A TKR is a surgical procedure done to exchange a smashed knee with a prosthesis, which is an reproduction joint typically made up of metal and plastic. Knee replacements may be necessary when knee conditions cause the cartilage to deteriorate to the point when here are no other options to relieve pain. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and knee joint injury typically make the pain that leads to a TKR. The procedure is very common, with more than 300000 TKR surgeries being performed every year in the United States.
Knee replacment… now HIP replacement surgery?
Friday, May 21st, 2010My mother Has gotten a knee substitution surgery. Now her knee is infected (which happens to 1-2% of people who’ve gotten a total knee substitution surgery), and the doctor is saying that the reason her mobility is very limited is due to her hip condition, and he’s now saying that she also needs to get a HIP substitution surgery done.
I know what youre going to say. She needs a 2nd opinion. Well I’ve lost count of the digit of doctors she’s seen. She also has rheumatoid arthiritis, which is the main reason why her red blood cells are attacking her all over. She also has complete loss of mobility in one of her shoulders. It’s sad to see someone fall to such a sad state, primarily when it’s your own mother. And this all ongoing when I was a teenager when she chose to help shovel the snow, she didn’t wear any gloves and that’s how the arthiritis ongoing. And she doesn’t really exercise and the whole physical therapy business didn’t help either. I don’t know what’s the next step. But it’s looking grim.
Is hip substitution surgery the next step? Or is this a misdiagnosis?

You doctor has recommended that you undergo knee substitution surgery. But what exactly does that mean? The knee is one of the most complex and one of the most vital joints in your body. Let’s take a look at the way the knee joint facility. The knee is made up of four bones. The femur, which is the large bone in your thigh, … attaches by ligaments to your tibia. Just below and next to the tibia is the fibula, which runs parallel to the tibia. The patella, or what we call the knee cap, rides on the knee joint as the knee bends. When the knee becomes diseased due to arthritis or other injury the bones rub together causing pain and can even restricting the ability to walk. No topic what the cause, one of the most effective ways to fix a smashed knee is to exchange it surgically. Patient Education In this procedure, the ends of the femur, tibia and patella are replaced with a metal joint which restores freedom of movement. Knee surgery is a major surgical procedure, but your doctor believes that the procedure –followed up with physical therapy and time to heal — will result in cut-rate pain and greater mobility. So make sure that you question your doctor to carefully give reasons for the reasons behind this recommendation. This is a feature PreOp® Surgery Video ©2010 MedSelfEd, Inc.
