How to promote and allow full recovery of a knee injury to avoid athritis and surgery?

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Had a knee injury not to long ago. It recovered, to an extent, but still bugs me from time to time. How can I get my knee back to normal (or at least as best I can) without medications of any kind. I don’t want to be reminded of this when I’m much older and don’t ever want surgery. Has anyone had any luck with this and what should I do?

Dr. Lonner Explains Total vs. Partial Knee Replacement Surgery

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Often referred to as an arthroplasty, knee substitution surgery is a procedure that removes the arthritic surfaces of the bones nearly the knee and caps the ends of the bones with smooth, polished, durable implants. Depending on what type of knee substitution you may be having, uncommon structures in your knee may or may not have to be removed. For instance, in the case of a total knee substitution, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, smashed joint cartilage, and menisci (shock absorbers) are removed and substituted by the implant. The medial and lateral collateral ligaments and tendons nearly the knee are typically left intact for all knee substitution procedures, except in unusual circumstances. Knee Pain ? Causes, Symptoms and Surgery Complications

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The knees are the most easily injured part of the body. The largest and most complicated joint, the knee is used for everything from standing up, sitting, to walking, running, etc. It’s a weight-bearing joint that straightens, bends, twists and rotates. All this motion increases your risk of acute or overuse knee injuries.

Knee pain accounts for approximately one third of musculoskeletal problems seen in primary care settings. This complaint is most prevalent in physically active patients, with as many as 54 percent of athletes having some degree of knee pain each year.1 Knee pain can be a source of significant disability, restricting the ability to work or perform activities of daily living.

Knee pain is an extremely common complaint, and here are many causes. It is vital to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause. If you have knee pain, some common causes include:

Knee pain is commonly caused by doing too much too soon when you haven’t exercised for a long period of time – primarily high-impact aerobics; walking, running or jumping on hard surfaces or uneven ground; unwarranted running up and down stairs (When you walk upstairs you are putting pressure on your knees that is equivalent to four times your body weight, when running up the stairs it can be eight times your body weight).

Knee osteoarthritis is a common cause of knee pain. The risk increases with age. Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis involving degeneration of the cartilage. Exercise is vital to maintain strength and flexibility of muscles supporting the knee, which reduces the stress on the knee joint.

Common Knee Symptoms

Popping

Popping and snapping within the knee is quite common, and often not a symptom of any particular problem. When the pops or snaps are painless, here is usually no problem–the larger concern is when these sounds are associated with pain. A pop is often heard or felt when a ligament, such as the ACL, is torn.

Crunching/Grinding

A sense of grinding or crunching is most often associated with bone grinding hostile to bone once the cartilage is worn away.

Knee arthritis typically affects patients over 50 years of age. It is more common in patients who are overweight, and weight loss tends to reduce the symptoms associated with knee arthritis. Here is also a genetic predisposition to this condition, meaning knee arthritis tends to run in families.

Possible Complications of Surgery

Honest complications may occur with any surgical procedure. These include but are not limited to: problems with anesthesia, cardiovascular problems including heart attack, vascular problems including thrombus, bronchopulmonary problems including emboli, genitourinary problems, and gastrointestinal problems. Certain additional complications related to joint substitution surgery in particular may include but are not limited to: flow of blood problems, blood clots in the legs and/or lungs, wound healing problems, hurt to nerves and blood vessels, limb length discrepancy, bone wearing away or abnormal bone formation.

Complications may require medical intervention including additional surgery and, in rare instances, may lead to death. Your doctor should discuss these potential complications with you.

Knee replacment… now HIP replacement surgery?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

My mother Has gotten a knee substitution surgery. Now her knee is infected (which happens to 1-2% of people who’ve gotten a total knee substitution surgery), and the doctor is saying that the reason her mobility is very limited is due to her hip condition, and he’s now saying that she also needs to get a HIP substitution surgery done.

I know what youre going to say. She needs a 2nd opinion. Well I’ve lost count of the digit of doctors she’s seen. She also has rheumatoid arthiritis, which is the main reason why her red blood cells are attacking her all over. She also has complete loss of mobility in one of her shoulders. It’s sad to see someone fall to such a sad state, primarily when it’s your own mother. And this all ongoing when I was a teenager when she chose to help shovel the snow, she didn’t wear any gloves and that’s how the arthiritis ongoing. And she doesn’t really exercise and the whole physical therapy business didn’t help either. I don’t know what’s the next step. But it’s looking grim.

Is hip substitution surgery the next step? Or is this a misdiagnosis?

What is shoulder arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that affects the cartilage of the joints. As the cartilage lining wears away, the shielding lining between the bones is lost–when this happens, painful bone-on-bone arthritis develops. Risks and benefits associated with shoulder substitution surgery: The most common complications which occur very rarely include shoulder stiffness, instability, infection, nerve hurt, and glenoid loosening

What is the procedure of shoulder substitution surgery?

Total shoulder substitution surgery alleviates pain by replacing the smashed bone and cartilage with a metal and plastic implant. The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint, much like the hip joint. The ball is the top of the arm bone (the humerus), and the socket is within the shoulder blade (scapula). This joint allows people an enormous range of motion at the shoulder. When shoulder substitution surgery is performed, the ball is removed from the top of the humerus and replaced with a metal implant. This is shaped like a half-moon and attached to a stem inserted down the crucial point of the arm bone. The socket part of the joint is shaved clean and replaced with a plastic socket that is cemented into the scapula.

Many countries have developed links for speedy treatments in India for their nationals on account of the fact that in these countries one has to wait for extended periods of time to undergo operations.
